THE CAPE'S CRUSADER : NEW BRIDGE EXPECTED TO FIGHT OFF EARTHQUAKE EVENT IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

This article describes the new 3,956-foot-long Bill E. Emerson Memorial Bridge that is being constructed over the Mississippi River. Because of its location, approximately 50 miles from New Madrid, Missouri, where the most violent earthquakes on record have occurred, the cable-stayed structure requires special seismic consideration. The article describes the seismic and geological characteristics of the site, then outlines the approach to building the bridge's foundation. For various reasons, both spread footings and driven steel piles were eliminated as viable foundation alternatives. Instead, engineers selected large diameter drilled shafts socketed into rock. The bridge is on track for completion in late 2003.
