THIS OLD HOUSE : THE LEE HOUSE ODYSSEY
When the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) needed to build the modern-day State Route 125 in southern California's Lemon Grove, a large, historic house was in the way. This article describes the odyssey of the 1928 Tudor-style home as it was refurbished and moved from its original location to a couple of interim locations and finally, under the wires of the Metropolitan Transit District's Red Line trolley, to its new home. The story recounts the bumps along the way, which included termites, determined bees, a shingled roof that fell apart, and temporarily severing the low-slung wires of a trolley line. The project began in 1993. The house was finally set on its new foundation in 2002.
