GUIDEBOOK FOR SAFER RURAL ROADS
More than 62 percent of Texas highways are rural two-lane roads. But while they carry less than eight percent of the total vehicle miles on state-maintained highways, they account for about 11 percent of total on-system vehicle crashes. Working with the Texas Department of Transportation's Brownwood and Childress districts, the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) came up with a guidebook aimed at addressing safety treatments for high-crash locations on rural two- lane highways in the state. This article describes the guidebook, which documents crash characteristics for rural roads, identifies low-cost safety treatments, and presents experiences with particular treatments.
