PUBLIC AND COMMUNITY TRANSPORTATION: IMPACT ON THE ECONOMY
Transportation has long been a leading generator of jobs, both directly through the construction, operation and maintenance of the nation's transportation system and indirectly through its support of the broader economy by making the movement of people and goods possible. Today, 11.3 million Americans are employed in transportation occupations. More than 8 million of these workers are directly linked to surface transportation reauthorization. All transportation occupations depend on a viable transportation system. They will continue to thrive only as long as strong investment in transportation infrastructure is sustained. The direct benefits of transportation investments have been thoroughly quantified. Each billion dollars of federal highway investment generates 47,500 jobs; 26,500 as roads and bridges are built and an additional 21,000 as those who earn their money directly from transportation activity buy goods and services. For every billion dollars in transit investment, job generation is virtually the same as that for highways.
