THE IMPACT OF REAL-TIME TRAFFIC CONGESTION INFORMATION ON THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY
This paper evaluates the benefits of real-time traffic congestion information on vehicle routing, and estimate the potential impact that the investment in Intelligent Transportation Systems can have on the Trucking industry. In Southeast Michigan our numerical study shows an average 7% cost savings and 11% decrease in the usage time of a truck in a congested traffic environment. One of the main findings is the quantification of the value of real-time traffic information, particularly during times of heavy congestion when such information is most useful. This suggests that depending on when deliveries are made, the ITS technology can serve a crucial role in cost reduction. Since many trucking firms have wireless communications capability between their dispatchers and their truck fleet, use of real-time traffic information would only require the additional cost of acquiring traffic information in real-time, providing the dispatcher with this information, and then transmitting this information to the drivers.
