ILIGHT FOR PEDESTRIAN ITS APPLICATIONS
LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) have capabilities as communication devices by fast switching of LEDs and modulation of visible light waves. The feasibility of this approach ("iLight") has already been studied, and the results show the low bit error rate in the communication link and demonstrate the usefulness of LED displays as an information beacon over a short distance in an outdoor and mobile environment. iLight is suitable for P-ITS (Pedestrian ITS) applications, when the technology is implemented into illumination signs or dot matrix characters for LED displays, which can provide information of safety, tourism and shopping for pedestrians on visible light. Evaluation of a prototype system ("EXIT" sign display) was conducted to ensure the usability of P-ITS applications initially for visually impaired people.
