DRIVE-BY GALLERIES: CONCRETE WALLS AS ART
Sound walls and retaining walls can be made more aesthetically attractive through the use of custom concrete finishes. This article describes the process of creating these finishes. These projects require collaboration between architects, engineers, government agencies, public arts organizations, artists, contractors, mold makers and neighborhood communities. Once a design has been approved and sculpted, a cast of the masterwork is made. This cast is used to make a form liner that is the reverse image of the original. The form liners are attached to forms and concrete is placed against the liner. The liner pattern is transferred to the wet concrete. After curing, the liner is stripped away to reveal the finish. This article includes photographs that show how artistic finishes for walls are created.
