MANUAL AND AUTOMATIC CONTROL OF THE LONGITUDINAL DYNAMICS OF INDIVIDUAL MOTOR VEHICLES

In this paper, the authors use results from analyses, simulations, and operational tests for comparing manual driving to driving with automatic control of the headway distance between a trailing vehicle and a preceding vehicle. Data and information from an operational test of an adaptive cruise control (ACC) system are used to provide the basis for discussing the basic approaches for designing and evaluating systems that can assist drivers by automatically controlling the range to an impeding vehicle.
