MEDICAL ASPECTS OF FITNESS TO DRIVE. A GUIDE FOR MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS

The Road Traffic Act of 1974 placed a licence holder under a statutory obligation to notify the authorities of any disability likely to be a source of dangers to others. This booklet is a revised edition for the guidance of doctors who are now likely to be consulted more often. The booklet describes the physical and mental conditions which should prevent the driving of motor vehicles and gives suggestions for advice to patients. Emphasis is given to the effects upon drivers of heavy goods and public service vehicles. Disorders discussed include those of the nervous system and those of personality and behaviour. The effect of drugs and medicines, ageing and fatigue are examined. The standards of fitness required of drivers, the law and administration of the systems for the licensing of drivers is discussed in an appendix. /TRRL/
