AUTOMATED GEOTECHNICAL INFORMATION AND DESIGN SYSTEM (AGIDS)

The Geotechnical team at the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center is integrating all research-quality databases and newly developed design improvements into a comprehensive automated geotechnical information and design system (AGIDS). This system will help bridge engineers evaluate design alternatives and obtain information quickly and economically from a centrally located computer source. FHWA scientists are developing common features and designing user-interface applications for performing cross queries, correlations, and engineering analyses. Several of the databases within AGIDS already contain modules for performing these operations, but these modules now will be linked through a single system that will generate design solutions based on interactive user inputs. This objective, quantitative system will support sound management in geotechnical design. The six databases within AGIDS are described in this TechBrief. They include the National Geotechnical Experimentation Sites Database, Deep Foundations Load Test Database, Shallow Foundations Database, Ground Improvement Technology Database, Publications Database, and National Bridge Inventory Database.
