CONDITION ASSESSMENT
The main objectives of condition assessment are to: detect possible deterioriation processes and determine their cause and extent; provide information that can be used in the assessment of structural capacity; indicate the condition of the structure and its elements as well as the highway structure stock as a whole; rank structures in order of their need for urgent repair and maintenance; and optimise the maintenance budget. This paper describes the approach to condition assessment that is used by the countries participating in COST 345. The different types of testing available and how these are used in the assessment of the condition of a structure are reviewed.
