FS STEERS A MARKET-ORIENTED COURSE
This article looks at the revitalisation of the national railway industry in Italy. Many of the recent changes have resulted from European Union liberalisation policies. The train operator Trenitalia has restructured its operating divisions to improve efficiency and quality of service, and the infrastructure company RFI is managing licences and safety certificates for new operators, and track access arrangements. Success has been brought about through the use of new technology and more efficient use of resources, including job losses. Fares and pricing are being examined to bridge the gap between Italy, with its cheaper fares, and the rest of Europe.
