STRATEGIC SAFETY MANAGEMENT - A CATALYST FOR CHANGE
This paper examines strategic safety management in the UK railway industry. Adopting a strategic approach to managing the competence of individuals, teams and organizations is key to the success of the industry. Safety is often seen as separate from business and commercial objectives. A good practice guide has been drawn up, with three parts: an analysis of the needs; self-assessment of an organization; and the use of performance indicators. The overall requirement is to create and manage a progressive safety culture. The self-assessment process enables organizations to take stock of their performance, where they need to improve, and what specific improvements should be made.
