SAFECOTE DE-ICER IN UK WINTER MAINTENANCE
In 2000, TRL was commissioned to investigate the effects of the Safecote de-icer product as an additive or pre-wetting agent for salt products. Safecote was evaluated with respect to corrosion of steel and aluminium coupons, freeze/thaw damage to concrete, freezing point temperature depression, environmental effects, skid resistance, binder stripping of asphalt surfacing, and application and spreading characteristics. The results were compared with those obtained with rock salt, urea, potassium acetate, ethylene glycol, pre-wetted salt and magnesium chloride. Safecote was shown to be a good corrosion inhibitor and to be less damaging to the environment and highway structures than rock salt.
