INTELLIGENT CHARGING FOR THE VEHICLE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The increasing electrical loads in vehicles have resulted in higher-output generators. The key element allowing optimal integration of the generator is the communication between the voltage regulator and the engine control unit (ECU) or powertrain control module (PCM). Two communication technologies between the PCM and generator regulator are described: the pulse width modulation (PWM) analogue communication system and the local interconnect network (LIN) communication system. The intelligent charging system is outlined. The PCM can control the idle speed and reduce the alternator's mechanical loading on the engine in order to give the engine maximum power. The regulator can provide diagnostic feedback to the PCM in the case of electrical or mechanical failure. The application of the LIN bus for a regulator is described. PCM-controlled regulators with PWM and LIN communication have been implemented using hybrid thick-film technology.
