EXPERIENCES WITH COMPUTER CONTROLS FOR FLAME-CUTTING MACHINES
Advances, such as the water-injection plasma torch, in flame-cutting techniques have made it necessary for the numerical control of the cutting machine to be as flexible as possible. Hard-wired NC for all the necessary features would be too expensive, and computer numerical control (CNC) was therefore developed. The Author (of Messer Griesheim) discusses his firm's experience with CNC and associated equipment in flame-cutting applications, which incorporate describes the MG 16 series of CNC systems, which incorporate a General-Automation SPC 16/45 mini-computer. The paper is presented under the headings: - 1: Introduction. 2: Hardware (Flame-Cutting Machines-Computer-Peripheral Devices-CNC Systems). 3: Software (CNC Software-Tape Generation Software-Other Software). 4: Advantages of CNC for Flame-Cutting Machines (Easier Operation with CNC-Higher Accuracy-Reliability and Fault-Finding). 5: Further Development. Under this last heading, it is mentioned that the MG 16 concept would, if this should be necessary, allow flame-cutting machine speeds of up to 24 m/min., that the software for tape generation is being developed towards the easier nesting of parts, and that computer-aided nesting by mini-computer, with graphic display and other features, will be an early development.
