GUIDE TO THE SELECTION AND USE OF BITUMEN EMULSIONS

Road construction and maintenance practitioners have traditionally used hot bitumen in a wide range of construction practices. Bitumen emulsions can provide an alternative delivery system with advantages in several areas including a reduction in the use of hydrocarbon cutters and the potential to extend the construction and maintenance season into the colder months. The main obstacle to the increased use of emulsions has been the lack of technical information and appropriate guides to assist users with the selection and application of bitumen emulsions. Austroads Surfacing Technology Project Team has developed this Bitumen Emulsion Guide from current information available in Australia and New Zealand. The guide is designed to provide emulsion users and those new to the application of emulsions with the necessary information to select and apply emulsions in a technically sound manner. The topics covered include: 1. basic theory including composition, specification and classification; 2 selection and application across a wide range of surfacing systems; and 3. handling and storage, and the avoidance of related problems.
