A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF CELLULAR PHONE USER PROFILES AND TRAVEL BEHAVIOR IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA AND THE PARIS REGION

This paper reports on the results of two cross-regional surveys of cellular phone users in the San Francisco Bay Area and in the Paris region. The objectives of the paper are to compare the similarities and differences between two urban regions in the way cellular users respond to the way technology can aid daily mobility and to understand the degree to which cellular communications are able to influence travel decisions for pre-trip planning and en route diversion choices. The paper begins with the methodology used for data collection and analysis, followed by findings of the cross-regional surveys.
