SFI GROUP SYSTEM--A CODING SYSTEM FOR SHIP INFORMATION

The Author (of the Ship Research Institute of Norway) points out some drawbacks of production-orientated coding systems for sub-dividing a ship for purposes of technical and techno-economic information classification, and describes the SFI group system, a multi-purpose decimal coding system in which the ship's equipment, systems, machinery, etc. are given group numbers according to their purpose or function. This function-oriented system, which is intended for use both within and between companies or other organizations, and is available in Norwegian and English versions, is aimed at assisting shipyards, owners, consultants, and sub- contractors when dealing with information on ship specification, estimating, accounting, cost control, maintenance, repairs, drawings, and filing. It is mentioned that EDP has increased the importance of such systems, and that the SFI system had (up to December 1975) been sold to about 130 Norwegian and other companies.
