PROJECT CO-OPERATION IN SHIPYARD EDP SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT

The Author (of the Swedish Shipbuilders' Computing Centre Ltd) examines the merits of co-operation between shipyards in the development of EDP systems, and in particular discusses how a shipyard should decide whether to develop a system independently or otherwise. The type of co-operation referred to is mainly the exchange of information and resources on a non-profit basis, but other types of joint projects are also considered. The factors to be taken into account when making such a decision are examined under the headings: Reasons for Co-operation; Obstacles to Co-operation; Necessary Conditions for Co-operation; Costs of Co-operation. Some cases of joint projects, involving different types of co-operation, are briefly discussed. A flow-chart is given to assist in decision-making.
