THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL COMPARISON BETWEEN TWO MINUTE DOPPLER AND SHORT DOPPLER SATELLITE POSITION FIX ACCURACY
This paper provides data to aid the user or prospective user of the Navy Navigation Satellite System to better understand what results can be expected from either a two-minute doppler position fix program or a short doppler position fix program. Brief summaries of satellite theory and the mathematical and mechanizational differences between two minute and short doppler computations are presented. A description of a computer program capable of computing both two-minute doppler and short doppler position fixes is given. Data is presented which has been computed using the actual real-time computer program. Position fix results from the two different doppler methods, obtained from the same satellite passes, are shown. Conclusions are drawn from these results as to the inherent accuracies of the two methods and in what circumstances one method or the other is more advantageous.
