STUDDED TIRES IN ALASKA
Studded tires offer improved traction and stopping ability on ice covered roads within a limited temperature range. They also offer increased hill climbing ability subject to the same surface temperature restrictions. Additionally, with four studded tires there is a greater improvement in stopping, and an increase in cornering ability on ice in the same temperature range. These improvements must be weighed against: the cost of studded tire wear and the increased hazard potential caused by striping removal, vehicle lane displacement, hydroplaning, decreased driver visibility, passing difficulties, increased stopping distances on concrete and the proven lack of safety improvement. In addition the driver delay and discomfort caused by repairs to studded tire worn roads must be considered as well as the potential for improved traction offered by the newly developed chains which have the possibility of minimal highway wear.
