SURFACE SAFETY SYSTEMS FOR OFFSHORE PLATFORMS
This paper addresses itself to the safety problems which are unique to offshore platforms because of the lack of space and the high concentration of wells and equipment that compounds the seriousness of any incident that might occur. In particular, the presentation examines shut- in devices, consisting of the pressure sensors and safety valves that are the most critical elements in the stem to guard against pollution and against loss of the facility. High-low pressure sensors used in wellheads, flowlines, production tree, separators and pipelines are discussed. Sand erosion control probes are considered. It is pointed out that basic surface safety system equipment has been developed as a result of U.S. regulatory agencies, manufacturers, and oil and gas companies working together to standardize proven practices. When all the requirements are fulfilled and maintained, the result should be operationally safe offshore production platform.
