TRANSVERSE BULKHEADS IN TANKERS: DESIGN AND PRODUCTION
This paper describes the design and production of the transverse oiltight bulkheads in a series of thirty-two crude oil tankers of 140-154,000 dwt at present building at Gotaverken Arendal. The determination of scantlings of the primary as well as the secondary stiffening of the bulkhead is based on the direct calculation procedure instead of current Classification Rules. Thus the vertical bulkhead webs are dimensioned by a grillage calculation of the bulkhead. Furthermore, vertical web deformations found from the grillage calculation are included in the dimensioning of bulkhead stiffeners which leads to stiffener dimensions that are quite different from Rule dimensions, especially for the middle and lower parts of the bulkhead. The paper also describes the production adaptation of the bulkhead design with reference to the division into hull sections and various detail designs, as well as the actual production of the bulkheads. Finally, the paper presents full-scale measurements of stresses and deformations of bulkhead stiffeners and webs carried out during the trials of the second ship in the series, the London Enterprise. Generally good agreement was obtained between calculated and measured values.
