NEW TECHNIQUE FOR AUTOMATIC DIRECTION FINDING IN THE VHF/FM MARINE BAND

This paper describes VHF/FM Automatic Direction Finding equipment developed specifically for use in the Marine Services. Its small size, light weight and relatively low cost will permit usage on virtually all types of vessels where VHF direction finding is desirable. The techniques used to overcome problems which are common to many ADF units such as 180 degrees ambiguity, loss in receiver sensitivity, garbled audio and inaccuracies due to signal multipathing are described. Illustrations showing results using other ADF antennas such as Adcock Arrays and Crossed Loop types versus the new Intech Incorporated approach are reviewed. Results of field tests on different types of vessels in several locations are presented. Photographs and specifications for the Intech Incorporated unit are also included.
