PEAK-PERIOD CONTROL OF A FREEWAY SYSTEM : SOME THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS
This document presents a theoretical study of freeway traffic control. The first part of the study is the determination of the criterion function by which the performance of the control system can be evaluated. This also includes a discussion of the macroscopic behavior of traffic at a bottleneck and a different points above and below the bottleneck. The type of traffic sensor or detector that would be required for freeway control is then discussed. A review and evaluation of possible freeway control and information dissemination techniques are presented. Finally, a linear programming model of the operation of a one-directional freeway subsystem is developed.
