IMPROVING NETWORK OPERATIONS WITH FREEWAY RAMP CONTROL
The Expressway Surveillance Project had has its immediate objective to develop, operate and evaluate a pilot network information and control system to reduce travel time and increase traffic flow. This paper describes the planning, conduct and evaluation of a series of experiments with freeway ramp control which were undertaken for the purpose of improving network operations following the development of a pilot detection system. The paper is presented in two parts: initial experimentation with manual control and initial experimentation with automatic control.
