A CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF GRAVEL MORTARS INCORPORATING HYDRAULIC BINDERS AND COMPOUND BINDERS WITH A VIEW TO REDUCING THEIR SHRINKAGE CRACKING

ETUDE DES MORTIERS DES GRAVES TRAITEES AUX LIANTS MIXTES EN VUE DE LA REDUCTION DE LEUR FISSURATION DE RETRAIT

The author determined, for various stabilized layers incorporating hydraulic binders, the properties involved in the prevention of the phenomenon of shrinkage cracking: Detection of rheological properties by creep tests and complex modulus tests; Determination of failure characteristics under tensile stress and beinding stress; Determination of shrinkage by measurement of heat shrinkage and hydraulic shrinkage. Using a model, an attempt was made to predict the shrinkage characteristics (drop in temperature leading to shrinkage, spacing and width of cracks) and to compare, for temperature drops leading to shrinkage, calculated values with values obtained directly during a heat shrinkage cracking test. Tests were performed on: Two materials incorporating hydraulic binders only: cement and granulated blast furnace slag; Two materials with the same binders, with a bituminous emulsion additive; The same material, incorporating cement with the addition of epoxy resin and a mixture of pitch and epoxy resin (in the form of prior stripping of the cement).
