RAIL FACILITIES FOR A MAJOR PORT. THE LOS ANGELES EXAMPLE

An important aspect of the recently completed Master Plan for the Port of Los Angeles is the upgrading and renovation of the ports rail system which is to be accomplished in several phases by the year 1990. The major recommendations involve consolidation of the various rail yards within and adjacent ot the waterfront and the abandonment of old and underutilized trackage. The benefits of this consolidation should be quite significant in terms of direct economic benefits as well as improvements in over-all safety and efficiency of operation. The most expensive element of the modernized rail system will be a new classification and hump yard that would serve not only Los Angeles Harbor, but would also have sufficient capacity to handle some of the rail needs of the Port of Long Beach as well. Considering the complexity of the proposed rail plan, it will, of necessity, require coordination with many governmental agencies and private interests.
