MARINE ECOLOGY AND OIL POLLUTION

Papers presented at a meeting of the Institute of Petroleum held at Aviemore, Scotland, are presented. The environmental responsibility of industry, education, and research is discussed, and commentary is provided on the incidence and treatment of oil pollution in oil ports; the principles, methods, and difficulties of biological monitoring; ecological changes in Milford Haven during its history as an oil port; and the applicability of the Milford Haven experience for new oil terminals. Information is provided on preliminary investigations of the sublittoral macrofauna of Milford Haven; the effect of Kuwait crude oil and the dispersant BP 1100X; the sources, constituents and treatments of refinery effluent effects through field surveys; the case history of a salt marsh; experimental investigations of refinery effluents; and some physical and biological effects of oil films floating on water. Other topics include the comparative toxicities of crude oils, refined oil products, and oil emulsions; the importance of behavioral patterns in toxicity testing and ecological prediction; offshore biological monitoring; an oil spill in the Straits of Magellan; oil spills from tankers; and a review of the world oil spillages of 1960-75.
