INTEGRATING THE AIRPORT SYSTEM INTO THE INTELLIGENT VEHICLE/HIGHWAY SYSTEM PROGRAMS

This paper explores the potential role that Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems-like technologies could play in addressing air transportation concerns and in ensuring that the airport system is properly integrated with future surface transportation systems. The paper begins with a characterization of the airport environment including: airport ground access, terminal curbside; parking facilities; in-terminal information and airfield surface. For each of these areas, the paper discusses current problems with a focus on those that can benefit from implementation of elements of IVHS technologies. The concludes with a discussion of the need for a framework to help quantify the benefits and to identify those areas with the largest potential return.
