TRACKING THE WORLDWIDE DEVELOPMENT OF IVHS NAVIGATION SYSTEMS
This article, based on an Intelligent Vehicle Highway System (IVHS) navigation systems database developed at the University of Calgary discusses types of IVHS systems and determines which are predominantly being used in North America, Japan, and Europe. After reviewing the types of IVHS navigation systems and positioning technologies, the author suggests that the two main impediments to the widespread acceptance of IVHS navigation systems are seamless road network databases and cost- effective communications systems.
