THE ARRB TEST METHODS FOR ASSESSING THE HARDENING OF 85/100 PEN PAVING BITUMENS DURING HANDLING AND SERVICE
The test methods involve two separate and consecutive treatments of the bitumen. The first is the rolling film over test (RFOT) treatment developed by the California State Highways Department to imitate the conditions encountered by the bitumen when it is used for the coating of hot aggregate. The second is a long term exposure of a thin film of the bitumen at 100 C to air. This second treatment was developed to obtain an assessment of the relative hardening in pavement service. The apparent viscosity of the bitumen is measured after each treatment on the shell sliding plate 'micro' viscometer. This report gives details of the test equipment and procedures and also the results of a limited study to assess the interlaboratory precision of the methods. (A) /TRRL/
