FOUNDATIONS OF BRIDGES AND OTHER STRUCTURES
The paper first reviews the progress of the design of foundations and earth retention systems for bridges and highway structures from an early reliance on experience and engineering judgement to implementation of more rational methods of design and quality control through soil mechanics discipline. The use of computers, new foundation and retaining systems, and major changes in quality control equipment and methodologies are then credited with remarkably quick advances in the geotechnical discipline. The paper then looks ahead to the likely greatest influence on innovation and change in geotechnical engineering: the implementation and refinement of load and resistance factor design as embodied in the AASHTO's load and resistance factor design code.
