NYK TO DEVELOP A "MAINTENANCE FREE" TANKER

Slowdown in new buildings has resulted in Nippon Yusen Kaisha diverting technical personnel to developing a maintenance free tanker. Key to the NYK plans will be a greatly increased amount of supervision of building processes, much more money spent on fault finding and quality control. The emphasis on improved structures will be backed up with extensive research into automation and instrumentation. These ideas will first be used on Hull No. 1005, the first VLCC to be build by Sumitomo. NYK has suggested that as a result of ships built under strict owner supervision and very high standards, a contract might be developed in which a shipbuilder would guarantee to pay demurrage arising from work not up to standard.
