SCIENCE OF FIGURING OUT 'MYSTERY' TRAFFIC JAMS : EXPLANATIONS ABOUND FOR PROBLEM

This article examines congestion as it occurs in commuter traffic. It describes the phenomenon of shock waves, or backward-forming waves that occur when cars slow down and bunch up as a result of an occurrence at the head of a line of vehicles. The article discusses the use of metering lights and congestion pricing as methods of dealing with the traffic congestion.
