JAPAN'S LARGEST MARINE TURBINE
A 50,000 s.h.p. marine steam turbine, the largest ever manufactured in Japan for a merchant ship, has been completed by the Tokyo No. 3 Works of IHI (Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.). The new turbine is for a 35,000-ton gross containership now being built for Japan Line, Ltd. The ship is to have a loading capacity of 1,495 containers with a speed of 25.1 knots and she will be assigned to the Japan/New York route. The features and main specifications are as follows: 1. The turbine is of a cross-compound type consisting of a high-pressure turbine and a low-pressure turbine. The high-pressure turbine can be applied to ratings up to 60,000 s.h.p. To reduce the engine length, the main condenser is arranged under the low-pressure turbine. 2. The ahead and astern valves are located compactly in the high-pressure turbine steam chest. For the ahead valve, a bar lift-type control system has been adopted. 3. The double reduction gear is of a compact locked train type and made of precision-machined high hardness alloy steel. 4. The main condenser has been designed at 710 mm. Hg to make its design compact. It uses a cooling tube of a new corrosion-resistant duplex-microstructure stainless steel. 5. The turbine is provided with an automation system which makes possible unmanned operation of the engine plant.
