SHIP MODEL BASIN
Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. and Hitachi Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Ltd. have decided to invest jointly in a new ship model basin company for hydrodynamic research, called the Akashi Ship Model Basin Co., Ltd. and scheduled to become operational in October 1973. The deep-water basin (200 meters by 13 meters by 6.5 meters deep) will be the largest privately-owned modern unit in the world. It will have a ship model towing carriage and a scale model about 6-7 m and of five tons displacement. A ship model will be shaped using a numerically controlled milling machine directly connected with the computer, which will also manipulate a drawing machine. The various calculations relating to test conditions, the analysis of the test results and other technical calculations required will be made by the computer as a background job.
