ITS HITS THE DOCK

This article describes how intermodal ports are applying Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to improve throughput and optimize land use. Descriptions of activities in ports at Los Angeles, Portland Georgia, Hong Kong, reflect a usage of Global Positiong Systems (GPS) for freight trackage and automatic equipment identification. The article notes, however, that in terms of creating a true intermodal network, barriers exist. It cites examples of how the jargon is different when dealing with the freight industry, and also how the freight industry is primarily still in the private domain, whereas ITS surface transportation projects primarily involve public/private partnerships.
