BOSCH DIRECTS WAY TO ECONOMY

The car manufacturer Bosch thinks that 50% of all petrol engines in cars will be fitted with direct injection by 2007. Bosch recently equipped the Volkswagen (VW) Lupo 1.4 FS with direct petrol injection. The only other car models yet to have it are the Mitsubishi Carisma and some versions of the Renault Megane. In the Megane only, fuel is mixed with air in the cylinder at the normal 14:1 ratio. At part load, both the Carisma and Lupo can run in 'stratified charge' mode, where a little fuel is injected directly near the spark plug to allow the engine to run economically a mixture as lean as 50:1. When more power is needed, their engines switch to 'homogeneous' mode, mixing fuel with air in the normal 14:1 mode. Direct injection not only burns less fuel, but also reduces the amount of energy wasted as heat. The Lupo engine uses the all-new MED7, which consists of a pressure reservoir and a fuel rail which works like a diesel common rail, delivering fuel under pressure to electromagnetic injectors. One disadvantage is that the stratified charge mode generates more nitrogen oxides (NOx); in the MED7, 70% of the NOx is recycled into the combustion chamber to reduce combustion temperature and oxygen levels.
