JAPANESE STUDY COMPARATIVE OPERATING COSTS

The shipping bureau of the Japanese Ministry of Transport has begun studies of comparing the operating cost of Japanese and foreign flag ships. A bureau official said the aim is to assess the effects which the 16.88% revaluation of the yen has had on the competitiveness of Japanese ships. According to major shipping companies, the revaluation has increased the operating costs of Japanese ships, so much so that Japanese vessels smaller than the Panamax type are generally not competitive with vessels of comparable sizes registered in other countries. The ministry official said that, as a first step, Japanese flag ships built with the aid of interest differential subsidies and long-term, low interest loans from the Japanese Development Bank and foreign flag vessels built with the assistance of long term, low interest loans from the Export-Import Bank of Japan will be studied.
