COMPOSITIONAL CLASSIFICATION OF TYPES OF ASPHALTS

In the UK, mixtures of aggregate and bitumen have traditionally been categorized as either asphalts or macadam. However, due to the harmonization of standards across Europe through CEN, this simple categorization is being removed. There are also two aspects by which materials such as asphalts can be classified: by their properties and by their composition. Obviously the two are interconnected, but when designing mixtures the starting point is the composition and the resulting properties are then checked. This paper describes and classifies the different types of asphalt by their composition. (A)
