BRAKE PIPES. A SURVEY OF CORROSION RESISTANCE OF METALLIC MATERIALS USED IN BRAKE PIPES
BROMSROER, EN OEVERSIKTOEVER KORROSIONSHAERDIGHETEN HOS METALLISKA MATERIAL FOER BROMSROER
This report examines the corrosion resistance of different materials used for brake pipes in road vehicles. The "bundy" pipe (formed from cold-rolled copper-coated steel strip) which is extensively used in Sweden, with protective coatings of copper, zinc, tin and terne, is not very suitable from the corrosion point of view since electrolytic corrosion easily occurs. Welded and seamless steel pipes, coated with zinc, tin, lead-tin alloys or copper, are used. If the coating is tin or terne, the material is prone to electrolytic corrosion. Pipes of phosphorus deoxidised copper are extensively used. Corrosion resistance is very good, but electrolytic corrosion must be guarded against by proper design. Austenitic stainless steel containing molybdenum is satisfactory for brake pipes, but ordinary austenitic or ferritic stainless steel is not suitable. The risk of electrolytic corrosion must be borne in mind. For all materials, constructional details are of very great significance since pockets of moisture will give rise to corrosion. When the price is considered in combination with corrosion resistance, phosphorus deoxidised copper is the best choice. /TRRL/
