PRIORITY FOR BUS TRAFFIC AT COORDINATED TRAFFIC SIGNAL INSTALLATIONS
PRIORITERING AV BUSSTRAFIK VID SAMORDNADE TRAFIKSIGNALANLAEGGNINGAR
Traffic lights along a road are often coordinated so that traffic at a certain speed is presented with green lights. Buses easily fall behind this rhythm. A test was carried out on a 900 M section of a busy road in stockholm, with coordinated signals, to see whether buses can be given priority over a longer section without adversely affecting other traffic. Five traffic lights, serving a mixture of crossing traffic ranging from pedestrians to a busy street, were fitted with special priority detectors, and the buses with transponders. The control units were modified so as to extend the green period on the bus route, and reduce it in the transverse direction, on receipt of the priority signal. It was found that average reduction in trip time over the section was 10%, and the scatter in trip times was considerably lower. The reduction at a signal is greatly dependent on the type of crossing traffic. Crossing vehicular traffic had its trip time increased by about 30 seconds, but this can be cut by redistribution of green periods. The best use of resources will be obtained by selecting those signals within a coordinated group which give the greatest gain in trip time. /TRRL/
