WESTMINSTER STATION, LONDON - DEEP EXCAVATION BELOW AN OPERATIONAL RAILWAY; CONSTRUCTING THE NEW JUBILEE LINE STATION INTERCHANGE HALL

Construction of the deep interchange hall at Westminster Station for the new Jubilee Line Extension presented a demanding engineering challenge, not least due to its position directly below an operational, high-level underground station in Central London. The new hall required the original station to be underpinned and supported on deep foundations in order to span 30 m {98 ft) obliquely across the new structure. An extensive top-down underpinning technique was employed: a segmental reinforced concrete slab beneath the existing station was supported by two longitudinal underpinning beams; bearing on 39 m {127 ft) deep diaphragm wall panels and massive 55 m (188 ft) deep, 3 m (9.8 ft) and (5.9 ft) diameter piles. With the existing station fully supported, the new hall was excavated top-down.
