GROUND VIBRATION FROM RAIL AND ROAD TRAFFIC: A NEW NORVEGIAN NATIONAL STANDARD

Due to soft soil conditions, ground borne vibration from rail and road traffic is a serious problem in some parts of Scandinavia. A new national Norwegian standard is under preparation and will be issued early in 1999. The paper presents the standard and the main investigation performed as part of the documentation work. The main focus of the standard is the description of procedures to measure ground borne vibration from traffic in buildings, and to assess its effect on recidents. Extensive investigations of existing measurement data form the basis for the standard. The applicability of the method in the standard has been approved through a Round-Robin test. To assess the effect on humans of this kind of vibration, sociological studies, combined with vibration measurements and predictions have been performed.
