EXTENSIVE MIXED IN PLACE SOIL IMPROVEMENT FOR THE BOTLEKSPOORTUNNEL
A large percentage of the Botlek rail tunnel under the Oude Maas is being bored using an EPB shield boring machine. Part of the route passes through saturated, soft, peat and clay layers. These layers were considered too weak to support a bored tunnel. Large scale soil improvement is to be carried out, mixing the existing soil with cement and possibly with additives. Full scale field trials were carried out beforehand, using various mortars and two techniques - one dry, one wet. Design aspects and the tests are discussed.
