STIFFNESS PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS TO USE IN PAVEMENT AND RAIL TRACK DESIGN
Based on a considerable number of repeated loading triaxial compression tests with sample deformation measurements on test specimens of unbound granular materials, sand and clays, the nonlinear relationships between stress and strain are discussed based on the knowledge of soil mechanics framework. Emphasis is put on the stiffness at small strains and particularly to the elastic stiffness, which may be regarded as a bench mark parameter for a given geomaterial and stress tensor. This is intended to clarify the meaning of resilient modulus currently used in the mechanistically based approach of pavement and rail track design.
