EVALUATION OF JAPANESE RAIL RECEIVED FROM THE NORFOLK AND WESTERN RAILROAD

The Association of American Railroads obtained samples of 136 lb/yd rail produced by the Nippon Steel Company to AREA specifications from the Norfolk and Western Railroad Company as part of its ongoing evaluation of domestic and foreign rail. This rail is of particular interest in view of the unconventional double heat rolling system used during its fabrication to obtain low residual hydrogen levels without control cooling the finished rail. Data gathered during an extensive metallurgical investigation showed that this material meets all existing AREA specifications and compares favorably with previously tested rail in regards to both metallurgical and physical properties.
