A STRAIN MONITORING SYSTEM FOR DETERMINING FORCES ON FALSEWORK

The principle of strain measurement using vibrating wire strain gauges has been used in the development of a system for determining the magnitude of the vertical and horizontal forces imposed on tubular scaffold falsework during construction operations. The system comprises of a unit, containing four strain gauges at 90 degrees to each other, clamped around the falsework member to become integral with it but not influencing its load carrying capacity, with manual or automatic recording equipment monitoring strain changes in terms of the inverse frequency of vibration of the wire. From the laboratory proving tests a linear calibration for the ratio of the mean strain for a given load was derived for a unit based on a knowledge of the physical and dimensional properties of the falsework member to which it was clamped. This ratio was then used to determine the applied force on falsework members to plus or minus 0.1 kn. Accuracy of determination of the value of the force is dependent on the accuracy of the measured dimensions. The results indicate that the system is suitable for static and slowly varying forces but peak dynamic forces may be lost because vibrating wire strain gauge systems cannot be monitored continuously under normal circumstances due to limitations in the response rate of the recording equipment. /Author/TRRL/
